The 24-year-old will enjoy some down time over the coming weeks before reporting back at Spurs

Harry Kane has set his sights on being fit for Tottenham Hotspur’s opening Premier League match at Newcastle United on August 11 (12.30pm kick-off).

The Spurs forward is having some well-earned rest after a tough summer where he led England to a fourth-placed finish at the World Cup.

Kane also finished with six goals and it was enough to earn him the golden boot and although he is now enjoying some down time, he is keen to be fit for the club’s opener and end his barren August run.

“I’ll hopefully be back for the first game and hopefully I can try and score in August this year,” said the Tottenham forward with a smile.

“Not many people get to say they’ve won a golden boot in a World Cup, so it’s a big achievement. I said before coming into the tournament I wanted to prove I could do it in these big tournaments.

“The 2016 Euros were disappointing for me and if anything I wanted to prove to myself I could score at this level. I’ve scored at every other level and it was important I did that.

“I’m extremely proud. I’m sure I’ll look back in a few weeks’ time and take all these experiences in.”

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino will have a big decision to make over Kane and the other members of the team which reached the latter stages of the World Cup.

Spurs had nine players in the semi-finals and all of them could potentially miss the clash at Newcastle given the tournament only finished on July 15.

Kane conceded it is down to Tottenham’s manager if he will play in the season opener next month, but is sure he will be physically fit and ready to go ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

“We’ll have to talk to the gaffer at Spurs, but it will be a couple of weeks away,” said the 24-year-old.

“Physically your body will always take you where you’d never think it would. The important thing is mentally. It will be difficult but something we have to deal with.

“We train all year round, we’re young, we’re fit, your body gets on with it. For me personally, and I know for the other lads, it’s just getting away from football really.

“It’s hard, but it’s what we have to do with the season starting so quickly.”
