England international remembers watching Spurs defeat then holders Inter Milan in 2010 and wants a repeat result tomorrow
Harry Winks hopes to be involved in a repeat of Tottenham Hotspur’s famous home win over European champions Inter Milan as the north Londoners prepare to host the continent’s current title-holders Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Winks – a boyhood Spurs fan who came through the club’s academy – was 14-years-old when Gareth Bale and his team-mates memorably beat Inter 3-1 at White Hart Lane in November 2010.
Harry Redknapp’s side went on to finish above the Italian side, who had lifted the European trophy the previous May, in their Champions League group en route to the quarter-finals.
Seven years on, Tottenham are again preparing to entertain the latest European winners – this time Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid at Wembley - and the top spot is again up for grabs in Group H, with the two sides having an identical record.

“I watched [the Inter match] at home with my dad on the telly,” Winks recalled. “It was a great night, a great game to watch as a Spurs fan so fingers crossed we can get the same sort of result.
“It’s something we’re going to aim to do. We’re going to go into the game expecting of ourselves that we can do it, and we’re looking forward to it.

“It was a disappointing result on Saturday [against Manchester United] but we’ve got to put that behind us and get ourselves ready for Wednesday.
“It’s going to be a tough game, we know that. They’re one of the best teams in the world so we’re going to respect them - and I guess they’re going to respect us as well because we played well [in the 1-1 draw] away at the Bernabeu.
“It’s a game we’re looking forward to. We got a good result against them a couple of weeks ago so hopefully we can get another one now and finish off the Champions League group in a strong way. We’re doing well in the Champions League so we’re confident going into the game.”
Winks will be hoping to get the nod again, having also started and impressed against Liverpool and Manchester United in the last fortnight – and another positive performance would boost his chances of getting another senior England call-up for the forthcoming internationals against Germany and Brazil.
“Every opportunity I get I make sure I work hard to stay in the team,” he said. “It’s been a good few weeks for me, with good results. Unfortunately Saturday wasn’t the same but every opportunity I get I go out there to work hard and do well.”
