Affordable healthy recipe kits created by a Haggerston social enterprise are set to “radically change the food culture in the UK”.

The products are the brainchild of Make Kit and contain everything needed to make a nutritious meal at home, including pre-measured ingredients and an easy-to-follow recipe.

They were trialled on Haggerston’s Fellows Court Estate for three months last year. A report by the Healthy London Partnership had found the estate was one of the areas with the highest obesity levels in the country.

Ninety per cent of customers said the kits helped improve their confidence in the kitchen. One said: “It’s saved me a lot of time with the kids, all the ingredients are there for you instead of you going to the shops.”

Initial recipes include Thai green curry and tuna melt pasta bake. A family Make Kit starts at £2.64 per person and can be ordered online for two or four people. They can be delivered at home or collected from a local pick-up point.

Make Kit was founded by chef Steve Wilson and Justine Fish, a food businesswoman.

Justine said: “We are really excited to be re-launching across Hackney.

“Meal kits are a new way of cooking at home and can help you eat healthier and save time and money.

“But most recipe kits are out-of-budget for the average UK household. We wanted to create a recipe kit that was affordable and bring these benefits to a more people.

“We really believe it has the potential to radically change the food culture in the UK.”

Make Kit is being supported by Hackney Council’s Healthier Hackney Fund, which provides funding and support to groups looking to make Hackney healthier.

The report by the HLP had found youngsters on the Fellows Court Estate believed unhealthy food was “cooler”.

Make Kit launched a fundraising campaign to get their kits off the ground and managed to raise £16,000 in less than a month, with match funding from the NHS.
