An East End bakery charity that helps women from vulnerable backgrounds whip up a better future for themselves is hoping to net £20,000 by tomorrow morning to buy much-needed equipment for its classes.

Luminary Bakery has already raised more than £15,000 to move out of the cramped Husk coffee shop site in Limehouse to a larger building in Allen Road, Stoke Newington – but the charity only has until 11am to get to its grand total.

Chris Paouros, GLA candidate for the Women’s Equality Party, told the Gazette: “I’ve lived in Hackney for years and saw this as something for us to try and support. [The bakery] works hard with local women to build skills and confidence and the social enterprise helps give them opportunities.”

The bakery puts disadvantaged women through an employability training programme covering cookery skills and personal development.

Founder Alice Williams, 27, said: “The funds will enable us to double our baking capacity and the number of women we can support. We love the vibe in Allen Road – there’s such a community feel.”
