Test for early signs of bronchitis and COPD this Thursday
FREE breathing tests to detect early signs of lung disease such as
chronic bronchitis and emphysema (COPD) are being offered this week.
Medical staff from Homerton Hospital and NHS City and Hackney are holding the tests, called spirometry in two locations on Thursday.
The team will be at Morrison’s Supermarket on Stamford Hill, between 10am and 4pm and at Hackney Central Library, Reading Lane, between 11am and 3pm.
Matthew Hodson, a nurse consultant at Homerton Hosptial’s specialist team ACERS (acute COPD early response services) said: “Breathing tests can measure the capacity of each individual’s lungs and is important in helping us to assess any existing damage to the lungs.
“The earlier we can assess people’s lung capacity, the more effective action we can take to help.”
COPD is an irreversible lung disease which kills around 30,000 people a year in the UK.
It is both preventable and treatable and early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can slow the progression of the disease.
