All residential roads in Hackney will have a 20mph limit by the end of March, as the borough becomes the second in London to commit to lower vehicle speeds.

Cllr Demirci, cabinet member for neighbourhoods confirmed at last week’s full council meeting that the council is on schedule to complete works to support the scheme by the end of the current financial year.

Green party London Assembly candidate Anna Hughes, who asked Cllr Demirci about the scheme, said it was “exciting news for Hackney residents who can look forward to safer, quieter and less polluted streets, which will encourage more walking and cycling.”

Islington became the first London Borough to implement 20mph limits on all residential roads last year.

But Caroline Allen, Green Greater London Assembly candidate for North East London, added that if the council really wanted to make a real difference to the health and well-being of residents, the scheme should include main roads, where collisions are concentrated and air pollution is highest.
