NHS East London and City are running awareness events for Mouth Cancer Action Month, urging people, “If in Doubt Get Checked Out.”

Although mouth cancer - also known as oral cancer - is not as high profile as some types of cancer there are over 5,000 new cases every year in the UK with close to 2,000 deaths as a result.

Looking in your mouth regularly is very important in spotting the disease early as the earlier mouth cancer is detected, the more successful treatment will be.

At least 75 per cent of mouth cancers could be prevented by stopping tobacco use and reducing alcohol consumption.

An NHS oral health promotion team is holding a community event to increase awareness of mouth cancer on Wednesday November 16 and Friday November 18 at the Marie Lloyd Day Centre, 329 Queensbridge Road, from 1.30pm to 3pm.
