People living with Parkinson’s disease are being offered special dance classes to help them “celebrate the joys of moving”.

Led by expert dance artist Danielle Teale and accompanied by a professional musician, the participants at St Joseph’s Hospice in Mare Street are guided through seated and standing exercises.

The idea is to improve stamina, flexibility, strength and all round fitness.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition which affects the way you move.

Ms Teale said: “I am keen to enable those that may be isolated to join in celebrating the joys of moving within a setting they feel comfortable.

“The classes will provide an artistic, creative and sociable activity giving people the opportunity for escapism and freedom from day to day life with Parkinson’s.”

Leslie who is living with Parkinson’s said: “After a Parkinson’s dance class, I walk better, talk better and live better. The specialised movements help maintain my body, my mind and my spirits.”

The project launches with two taster sessions in October followed by 12 further sessions.
