The onus will be on the South Korean to step up in Harry Kane’s absence, but he says he doesn’t feel the pressure

Heung-min Son says Spurs must believe they are ready to make the final step ahead of two crunch matches with Manchester City over the next week.

Tottenham Hotspur visit the Etihad on Wednesday for the Champions League quarter-final second leg with Mauricio Pochettino’s team leading 1-0 from the first tie.

Son scored the winner at the club’s new stadium and despite recent injuries to Harry Kane and Dele Alli, he insists everyone at Spurs feels positive.

After Wednesday, the Lilywhites will take on the Premier League champions again on Saturday away from home in the division with both eager for points in their respective battles for the title and a top-four finish.

“It’s very tough of course, but the players should know what we’re doing, what we expect,” Son said.

“The players are doing well with two years away from home and I think we are in a positive way and in a good way.

“We’re in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, playing for the top four of the Premier League.

“Of course we’re missing something, but I think we’re in a very positive way and we should just believe in the final step.”

For Son, this has been another remarkable season with the attacker closing in on the 20-goal mark again.

He has currently found the net 18 times this campaign, which equals his tally from the past term, but he will hope to beat his best at Tottenham of 21 goals by the time this season is out.

Everything could have been so different had the South Korea star departed White Hart Lane at the end of his first year with the club in 2015.

He was convinced to stay, however, and the rest is history with Son the first Spurs player to score at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League.

“I’m not the type who is always looking behind. I’m looking forward to be better and improve and try to improve every day,” he said.

“Of course it was tough and it’s impossible to only have good times. Sometimes you have tough times to be better.

“Around me, the club, the coaching staff and my team-mates, when I have a tough time, they help me lots to be here right now.

“I’m really grateful for this situation and of course I’m not finished and I still try to improve every day.”

With Kane out for the rest of the season and Alli a doubt for Wednesday, all eyes will be on Son, but he doesn’t feel the pressure and is instead looking forward to facing Pep Guardiola’s quadruple-chasing team twice in the space of a few days.

He added: “I just enjoy the football. This is what I can only do, this is what I can only do and best to do.

“Everyone, not just me, should enjoy the games, scoring and winning the games. We should not put this pressure on ourselves about these situations.”
