The South Korean was introduced off the bench and helped the Lilywhites progress into the fourth round of the League Cup

Heung-min Son was pleased Tottenham Hotspur come through a ‘crazy’ League Cup third round tie against Watford at Stadium MK last night.

For long periods, it seemed Spurs would exit the competition after Isaac Success fired the Hornets in front 36 seconds after half time.

The introduction of Son and Mousa Dembele in the 64th minute helped Tottenham get a foothold back in the game though, and Dele Alli’s penalty in the 81st minute levelled things up in front of 23,650 spectators.

Erik Lamela then produced a superb finish to a fine counter-attack five minutes later to put Mauricio Pochettino’s men on course for round four.

A deflected goal by Etienne Capoue a minute from time forced penalties, however, but Paulo Gazzaniga was the hero, as he saved from Capoue and Domingos Quina while Son, Lamela, Fernando Llorente and Alli netted as the hosts won 4-2 on spot-kicks.

“We were 1-0 down, then it went 2-1 and last minute we conceded again, so it went 2-2,” Son said.

“It was a crazy game, but I am happy for us to win. It was a really difficult game, but with the result, we can be happy and happy to be in the next round.”

After Manchester United were knocked out on penalties to Derby County on Tuesday, and Liverpool lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea last night, Spurs seem to have an excellent chance of winning the League Cup this term.

Yet the former Bayer Leverkusen attacker warned against complacency, especially as Tottenham were knocked out in the fourth round by local rivals West Ham United last season at Wembley Stadium.

Son, when asked about United and Liverpool’s exit, insisted: “It doesn’t matter, the cup is far away. We are just looking at round to round. It is very important.

“We don’t miss any chance. We are thinking, of course, but Chelsea is still there and you never know.

“Manchester United are out, Liverpool are out, but you never know how football is going to go.

“Crazy things always happen in football, so that is why we need to be ready for every single day and every single game.”
