The victim, named Chris, is now too scared to go to sleep for fear he will be robbed of what little he has for a second time.

Chris, who sits with his dog outside the station in Upper Clapton Road, has also been kicked in the head and had a bottle thrown at him in the last week.

In a show of community spirit, volunteers from the Jewish neighbourhood watch group Shomrim took him some hot coffee and cake last night after hearing about his ordeal.

Shomrim volunteer Beinish Beigel said: “Chris always sits with his dog outside Clapton. He was asleep one night when someone stole his suitcase full of his art drawings and the small change he had collected throughout the day.

“In another incident, a bottle was chucked at him in an unprovoked attack, and in another unprovoked attack, he was kicked in the side of his head, causing his ear to bleed. These three incidents all happened within the last week.

“Some Shomrim members gave him a hot coffee and some cakes, and had a long friendly chat with him, which he very much enjoyed.

“He told us he is too afraid to go to sleep as he fears he’ll be robbed again.

“Chris is a very nice person, he’s harmless and friendly.”
