Hackney Council wants to rent out rooms in Stoke Newington Town Hall and build homes behind it to help offset the millions spent on upkeep.
Some £5million has been shelled out in recent years on maintaining the Church Street building, and future costs are estimated at £10m.
A consultation was launched yesterday to gauge public opinion on the idea. Possibilities include commercial workspaces, creative studios and “introducing” housing on the rear of the site.
The chamber, assembly hall and library will all be “retained” under the proposals.
The council is now getting to work on a more detailed plan for the Grade-II listed building.
Planning and business boss Cllr Guy Nicholson said: “Stoke Newington Town Hall and Library have long been cherished as an important part of the borough’s heritage and the facilities are valued now more than ever.
“By making better use of the underused and hidden spaces in the town hall campus there is an opportunity to create a solid foundation for its long term future.
“It is important that the council remains the responsible custodian and as such must work up a plan that protects the facilities and is financially sustainable. If you have some thoughts about how this can be achieved then please do send them in and help shape the future of these important buildings.”
