A Hoxton market trader was fined £800 and ordered to pay £3,000 costs after pleading guilty to selling fake designer clothes.

Michael Missing was sentenced by Judge James Dawson at Snaresbrook Crown Court last Tuesday. He was ordered to pay within 56 days or undergo 28 days imprisonment.

On December 3 and December 17, officers from Hackney Trading Standards seized a quantity of counterfeit Timberland, Abercrombie & Fitch and Polo Ralph Lauren t-shirts and sweaters from Mr Missing’s stall in Hoxton Street Market, Hoxton Street, Shoreditch. The market value of the counterfeit goods seized had an estimated total of £2,500.

Mr Missing who lives in Rectory Road, Ingatestone, Essex pleaded guilty to being in possession of copies of Abercrombie & Fitch t-shirts, Polo Ralph Lauren t-shirts, Polo Ralph Lauren sweaters and Timberland t-shirts that were copies of a registered trade mark. He was fined £800, which equates to £200 for each breach of copyright.

Cllr Feryal Demirci, Hackney Council’s cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “Hackney shops and market stalls are places where people want to find genuine goods sold at decent prices. Those caught selling counterfeit good by trading standards are cheating the public of a fair deal. The message is clear Hackney Council will investigate and prosecute when we have the evidence to do so.”
