Tottenham blogger David Lee says it is important for Spurs to finish above north London arch-rivals Arsenal after their title dream was ended by Chelsea.

Just when you think the gut-wrenching anxiety that comes with supporting Tottenham is a thing of the past, two bitterly disappointing results in a week remind you of the perils of following the Lilywhites.

The stony silence that greeted Craig Dawson’s headed equaliser at White Hart Lane during our 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion was haunting – and as for Eden Hazard’s late strike at Stamford Bridge on Monday night, that feeling of despair will take a while to shake off.

Our inability to finish the job against Chelsea has handed their supporters a boastful card that will undoubtedly be played against us for seasons to come – they stopped us winning the league.

But we can still finish above Arsenal and, with that goal realistically just one win away, we need to finish the job and ensure our north London neighbours don’t also get the last laugh.

While the chance of sealing a historic Premier League title was mathematically taken away from us by Chelsea, any Tottenham fan will tell you that the fatal blows to our title challenge were landed when we failed to beat Leicester and Arsenal at home.

The contrast between the two north London clubs has been quite remarkable. White Hart Lane has become a hub of positivity with fans, players and management alike looking optimistically to the future.

The Emirates, on the other hand, now resembles something of a crumbling empire with the club’s leader Arsene Wenger seemingly clutching onto the last vestiges of his rule.

But what message would it send out if, despite all our progress and promise, we still finished below Arsenal?

We’ve seen the mentality of the players change on the pitch, and key clashes against the Premier League’s big hitters no longer bring a sense of fear. But the psychological impact of finishing above our fiercest rivals is still important to give our players the confirmation they deserve that the balance of power is finally shifting.

Yes, the Premier League crown may have eluded us, but automatic Champions League qualification is all but assured and the players can be proud of their efforts.

Now let’s finish the work we started, beat Southampton on Sunday and make sure we at least secure one title this season – the title of the best team in London.
