North London Assembly Member, Jennette Arnold expressed support for the Hackney Borough of Sanctuary initiative at its first annual general meeting last week.
The group, launched last March and is part of a national initiative to encourage communities to provide more support and resources to refugees and asylum seekers.
New supporters were welcomed with a festive evening of traditional Turkish music and food, as members discussed goals for the coming months.
“I absolutely support the principle, and I love that it is starting with the citizen,” said Ms Arnold, who expressed a desire to see the borough remain a diverse area, welcoming people from all over the world.
