Watching Chelsea lift the Capital One Cup has increased Tottenham’s resolve to return to Wembley and lift the trophy themselves, says Harry Kane.

Spurs enjoyed encouraging periods of possession and pressure in the first half but their key creative players were well shackled and they were ultimately defeated 2-0.

Jose Mourinho’s Blues took the lead just before half-time as John Terry’s strike flicked off Eric Dier and beat Hugo Lloris, and Diego Costa’s second-half effort struck Kyle Walker and flew in at the near post.

Kane was hugely disappointed to be on the losing side but he believes the future is bright under Mauricio Pochettino, and that the loss has strengthened Tottenham’s resolve to win silverware in the years ahead.

“I’m gutted for the players, for my team-mates, for the staff, for the club itself,” he said. “I thought we gave it a go, we gave it our all. We played the way we wanted to play and it just didn’t go for us.

“Both their goals you could say were a bit scrappy, a bit lucky, but that’s the difference in the top games on the big stage and it went Chelsea’s way. We’ve got to dust ourselves off and move on as quickly as possible.

“I think everyone’s proud of themselves. It’s our first season, we’ve got a very young team and a new coaching staff and I thought we gave a good account of ourselves.

“A lot of us were playing in our first final and it’s an experience and we’ve got to learn from it. When you see Chelsea lifting that trophy it makes the fire in your belly burn that you want to be back and you want to be lifting that trophy, and that’s what we’ve got to do with the squad we have.”

Much of the pre-match build-focus centred on Kane, given that two of his 24 goals this season came against Chelsea when Spurs triumphed 5-3 in the league on New Year’s Day.

The 21-year-old had few chances to continue his scoring run in his first final, but will not beat himself up about it.

“I’m disappointed, I’m always disappointed when I don’t score,” he said. “But it’s tough, Chelsea are a good side. They’ve got one of the best defences in the league and they showed that. But, again, neither team created real clear-cut chances. It just went Chelsea’s way and that’s something we’ve got to learn from and try to move on from.

“How am I handling the furore around me this season? I’m enjoying it, it shows I’m doing well and that’s what any footballer wants – to have the backing from your fans and everyone around you, so I’m enjoying it.

“We’ve got to move on as quickly as we can because we’ve got another game on Wednesday [at home against Swansea] and I’ll be looking to get on the scoresheet there and get back to scoring ways. It’s a disappointing day but we hope to be back in the seasons to come.

“The aim now is to finish in the top four. The Premier League is the only competition we’re in so we’ve got to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible and see where it takes us in the league. We’ve got character in this side and we’ll be looking to win at home on Wednesday.”

Kane could be returning to Wembley later this month if, as expected, he gets his first call-up for the senior England squad.

He said: “It would be nice, of course, I’ve always said if I’m picked it will be a very proud moment. But, again, I’ve just got to keep focused on the games ahead and try to do my best for Tottenham Hotspur, and if I’m picked then obviously I’ll be delighted.”
