Tottenham defender Trippier rues costly mistake in narrow home loss

Kieran Trippier couldn’t hide his frustration after Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 1-0 loss at home to Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford’s 44th-minute winner handed Red Devils caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a sixth straight win.

It occurred after Trippier gave the ball away near the halfway line and in the blink of an eye Paul Pogba had picked out Rashford with an inch-perfect pass and the England international smartly drilled into the corner.

Trippier admitted: “It wouldn’t have been a terrific pass if I hadn’t given the ball away, so I know I made a mistake.

“I have to move on from it. It was a quality pass and obviously a good finish too from Marcus, but that wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t made a mistake.”

After Trippier’s error, Spurs recovered well and should have claimed at least a point following a dominant second-half display.

Harry Kane was superbly denied by David de Gea in the 49th minute and it was the start of the de Gea show at Wembley.

The Spaniard made two excellent stops from Dele Alli, an outstanding save with his foot from Toby Alderweireld’s volley and finally a fine block from Kane’s fierce effort with four minutes left.

In total the United custodian made 11 saves in the second half, which is the most made by any goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.

When asked about de Gea’s display, Trippier replied: “I have seen Hugo (Lloris) do it many times, but he pulled off a big amount of saves and great saves as well.

“It was just one of them days – any other day they may have gone in – so we have to take this one on the chin and move on.”

He concluded: “The lads are frustrated with themselves and any other day ‘H’ could have scored a hat-trick, but you have to give credit to de Gea.”

Spurs were left to rue a lack of clinical edge in the final third and Trippier’s mistake, which in the end proved costly and not for the first time this season.
