Kingsmead kids and Immediate Theatre deliver serious message through fairytale show

Hackney youngsters gave their Christmas performance of Hansel and Gretel a hard-hitting twist, by touching on the problems of homelessness and food poverty.
Children from the Kingsmead estate worked with Immediate Theatre to put on their adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale, thanks to funding from Sanctuary Housing.
The charity provides community-based drama provision for children and young people to help them develop skills, confidence and a sense of community.
Eighteen young people took part in the production, taking on the roles of woodcutters, witches, children and a narrator.
The show was the climax to a calendar of workshops over the past year.
Immediate Theatre has secured funding to continue the sessions for a further three years.
Weekly sessions recommence at the Kingsmead Community Centre on January 10. Call 020 7682 3031 for more information.
