O’s striker David Mooney insists that the team sent out a warning to the rest of the league after their victory at Peterborough

Leyton Orient forward David Mooney believes their thrilling 3-1 top-of-the-table victory over Peterborough United on Saturday has firmly put to bed any notion that the O’s can’t beat the top teams in League One, writes George Sessions.

Orient have started the campaign magnificently, but some had suggested the real test lies when they face the so called ‘big teams’.

But when that challenge arose at the weekend they comfortably brushed Posh aside and Mooney was pleased to dispel the myth.

“We played MK Dons, Brentford away and we’ve come here and won,” he said.

Penalty

“The Coventry game was obviously the one where we didn’t perform to our best and we missed Kevin Lisbie that night. I’ve missed a penalty at 1-0 down so on another day we probably could have got away with a draw.

“I think we have played most of the top teams, there is just Wolves still to come.”

Before helping Orient to the London Road win, Mooney had suffered a frustrating time in front of goal having failed to score throughout October, including missed penalties in successive weeks against Tranmere and Coventry.

His luck changed at the weekend though and he believes it sent a warning to the chasing pack.

Mooney added: “Last month wasn’t the best month for me and I was disappointed when I hit the crossbar from the edge of the box.

“I was having a chat with Kevin Nugent during the week and the last few games I haven’t been getting myself in the box.

Important

“I think it was important for me to get into the box and maybe play off the back of the defenders, rather than in front.

“Thankfully I’ve managed to get two good goals so I am very happy.

“That is probably the best we have played. The gaffer said after the game we have raised the bar to a new level.

“They are a good side and we’ve run out quite comfortable so that shows how well we have played.”

Next up for the O’s is an FA Cup first round tie at Brisbane Road against Conference Premier side Southport and if selected Mooney will be hoping to be amongst the goals again,

“I haven’t scored in the cups this year so hopefully I get to play,” he added

“I don’t know what the manager is going to do, but if I play I’ll be looking to score again.”
