The Castle Cinema reopening has moved a step closer after the new owners signed a lease for the venue.
A crowdfunding campaign by Pillow Cinema saw 667 people raise £57,000 – over and above the £45,000 target to reopen the 60-seat venue in Brooksby’s Walk, Homerton.
It closed its doors 50 years ago but is now set to be Hackney’s second independent cinema.
Asher Charman and Danielle Swift, who have been running pop-up cinema events since 2012 under the Hot Tub Cinema and Pillow Cinema names, earmarked the Castle as their permanent home.
They wrote on their Kickstarter page: “The build will be well on it’s way in the next couple of weeks. Let the cinematic transformation begin!”
