London Fields Lido to close until summer for delayed ‘urgent repairs’

Urgent repairs to London Fields Lido will start in a fortnight - and could see the pool shut for months.
Tiles started to crack and come away from the pool wall last year and temporary barriers were installed to stabilise it.
Tests found problems with the stone between the pool tank and the render holding the tiles.
In October the council announced the pool would be shut from November until spring.
But a delay in appointing a contractor means the works will now start on April 10.
The council is taking the opportunity to fully renovate the indoor changing rooms and the main reception area, and the pool is not expected to reopen until the summer – although an exact date has not been given.
Cllr Jon Burke said: “While we obviously want the Lido to be closed for as short a period as possible, it is crucial that the repairs are carried out to the highest standard possible.
“As the works progress we’ll have a clearer indication of a completion date, and will provide regular updates and information. As soon as we have some assurance on this we will share it.”
He continued: “I understand that closing the Lido will be frustrating for regular users, but the works are essential and the risks will be minimised if they are undertaken during the warmer weather.
“Taking care to ensure the work is conducted in the best circumstances also, we have been able to get Lido users’ input on the designs for the refurbished indoor changing rooms and reception area.”
The new changing rooms will provide private changing cubicles in the separate male and female changing areas, and indoor storage lockers.
There will also be additional outdoor showers, mirrors and hairdryers, and family change and baby change facilities.
Pool users’ suggestions for a poolside sauna and the use of solar panels to heat the lido are not included in the plans, but might be considered for the future according to the council.
