Lower Clapton commuters became mired in traffic chaos this morning (Thursday) following an accident in the early hours that saw a car smash through a shopfront window.

A police spokeswoman said the incident happened at about 12.45am in Downs Road, near the junction with Lower Clapton Road, and added: “There were no suspicious circumstances and no arrests. It was just an accident.

“Two passengers were hurt, but their injuries are thought to be non life-threatening or life-changing.”

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Our staff treated two patients; a 33-year-old man, who was treated for a back injury and taken as a priority to Royal London Hospital, and a 21-yar-old woman, who was treated for neck, back and chest pains and was also taken as a priority to Royal London Hospital.”

The road was closed and didn’t reopen until about 8.25am, which caused severe delays for commuters who had to follow diversion routes.
