The Brazilian will need time to get up to speed at Spurs, but his record at Paris Saint-Germain suggests this is a brilliant signing

Spurs have announced the signing of winger Lucas Moura from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee understood to be in the region of £25 million.

The deal is quite a coup for Tottenham Hotspur, who were not expected to be busy this month, but have made a significant addition to their squad.

Moura has agreed a five-and-a-half year contract with the north Londoners and boosts their options in attack.

A Brazil international, the former Sao Paulo star has struggled for game time at PSG this season, but has, on the whole, impressed since moving to France in January 2013.

The 25-year-old has played 36 times for his country and featured against England on two occasions – coming off the bench during a 2-1 defeat at Wembley in February 2013.

But Moura hasn’t represented his country for 18 months; since playing in the goalless draw with Ecuador in the Copa America in June 2016, so will hope this move can revitalise his international career.

A four-time Ligue 1 champion, the speed merchant had made his mark in Paris before being frozen out this season.

The winger improved his goal tally during each of his four full seasons, hitting five goals during the 2013/14 campaign when aged 21.

He also claimed 12 assists overall in that term with PSG winning the league, reaching the last-eight of the Champions League and triumphing in the Trophee des Champions – the equivalent of the Community Shield – and the Coupe de la Ligue (League Cup).

The following campaign, Moura scored eight times, with seven in Ligue 1, and picked up six assists as the Parisians sealed a domestic quadruple, this time winning the Coupe de France, and again made the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Moura excelled even more in the 2015/16 season and went on to score nine goals in the league and register four assists while also breaking his duck in Europe.

He netted in Champions League victories over Malmo and Shakhtar Donetsk and also scored in a Coupe de France success over Saint-Etienne.

The Brazilian netted in further Coupe de la Ligue wins over Saint-Etienne and Lyon as Paris Saint-Germain again won Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue plus the Trophee des Champions.

It meant Moura finished the campaign with more medals and a final goal tally of 14, but again the Parc des Princes outfit exited the Champions League in the last eight.

Last season was easily the Brazil internationals best for PSG, even if it wasn’t the greatest for the club.

Moura scored 12 times in Ligue 1 and created five more goals, but Unai Emery’s team could only finish second.

The talented attacker did score in the Trophee des Champions triumph over Lyon and helped PSG with the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue again, as Moura ended the campaign with 18 goals.

It was an extremely impressive tally for a wide-man and you can understand why the Brazilian must have been left frustrated of late.

After a campaign where he scored 18 goals and provided numerous assists, he found himself on the bench for the start of this season.

When Moura has played, he has showed his quality, scoring in a league win over Metz while also providing another assist in his five Ligue 1 showings to date.

The one-time Corinthians youth has exited Paris Saint-Germain with a fine tally of 45 goals in all competitions and having wore the club’s stripes on over 200 occasions.

It is an excellent return for a player still yet to reach his peak years and having come to France with huge potential, but nothing more.

There is no doubt Moura has enormous ability, but he will need time initially at Spurs to get up to speed with Mauricio Pochettino’s methods, the pace of the Premier League and get his full fitness back after six months largely on the sidelines.

He should still have a big part to play this season though, and Tottenham appear to have made a wonderful addition to their squad.

Only time will tell, but Daniel Levy and Pochettino may just have made a brilliant signing for Spurs and at a fantastic price.
