Each week, the Gazette takes to the streets to unearth something being manufactured right here in Hackney. This week we speak to the guys bringing a sweet taste of Italy to Hackney.

Everyone loves ice cream – but who knew two mates were whipping up the finest Italian Gelato in the middle of Hackney?

Sam Newman and Enrico Pavoncelli founded Hackney Gelato three years ago using the finest machinery from Italy, where Enrico is from and where Sam grew up.

The pair met while working in Michelin-starred Locanda Locatelli and kept in touch. After discussing the lack of gelato in east London, the pair toured Sicily and Calabria learning from the masters. Then they brought came back and started making their own in Regent Studios, South Hackney. Sam said: “We shape it to the English palette. We had Snickers gelato and a bakewell tart one. We also had an avocado and bacon one too.”

Everywhere from the Royal Albert Hall to the Rio Cinema stocks it, and tubs can be bought at Village Organic in Victoria Park, Harvest in Stoke Newington Road and Footnote Cafe in Milton Way.
