Each week, the Gazette takes to the streets to unearth something being manufactured right here in Hackney. This week we speak to the guys at Yard Sale Pizza, hot on the heels of their national award.

A pizza joint founded by three friends in Lower Clapton Road has topped off a great three years by winning the Observer Food Monthly award for the Best Cheap Eat.

Yard Sale is the brainchild of Nick Buckland, Dan Spinney and Jonnie Tate and has collected many awards in London, but the honour from the Sunday paper is their first national recognition.

Commenting on the win, the trio said: “Winning the award really means a huge deal for our small growing business. Our brilliant hard working team are largely to thank as well as our wonderfully loyal customers who keep spreading the good word. We’re totally buzzing for this one!”

The success of the company has allowed Yard Sale to open up in Blackstock Road, Finsbury Park and in Walthamstow. It is known for its “love ins”, when they bring in chefs to create their own pizzas. There’s been Burns Night haggis pizza from Deeney’s cafe in Leyton, the pastrami calzone with Monty’s Deli in Hoxton Street and a jerk chicken pizza from White Men Can’t Jerk in Old Street.
