A man was seen getting into the River Lea this morning and seven fire engines, six police squad cars, ambulances and police and air ambulance helicopters were on hand at the scene.

Police were alerted by the London Ambulance Service (LAS) at 8.40am, after a member of the public reported concerns for the welfare of a man who was seen entering the water.

The Met’s marine support unit and air support unit were also there and the area near Lea Bridge Road, Lower Clapton, was cordoned off.

A witness said she could no longer see him after 9am, as he had disappeared under the water.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said the man was recovered from the river just after 10am, and and is currently receiving medical treatment from the LAS.
