Champions League Group B: PSV 2 Tottenham Hotspur 2

Two sloppy goals, and a red card to Hugo Lloris, saw Tottenham Hotspur throw away a lead at PSV and drop more points in Group B following a 2-2 draw which sees their hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stage of the Champions League all but over.

Spurs needed a victory to kick-start their campaign, after defeats to Inter Milan and Barcelona, and despite goals from Lucas Moura and Harry Kane, Luuk de Jong’s 87-minute leveller earned the hosts a share of the spoils.

It would have left Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino incredibly frustrated after his team dominated the vast majority of the encounter.

While this draw made it three games without a defeat for Spurs, if they want to play European football early in the new year, it will most likely have to be in the Europa League.

Pochettino made three changes to the starting team which beat West Ham United 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

Mousa Dembele, Christian Eriksen and Heung-min Son were included from the off while Harry Winks, Erik Lamela and Moussa Sissoko dropped to the bench.

After dominating the opening exchanges, Spurs nearly took the lead in the 18th minute, but Kane saw a header hit the crossbar from Kieran Trippier’s cross.

It was all the visitors in Eindhoven, but some slack defending at the back handed PSV a chance in the 30th minute and they grasped it with both hands.

Davinson Sanchez put fellow ex-Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld under pressure and the Belgian lost the ball to Hirving Lozano.

The home attacker raced towards the Tottenham goal and although Alderweireld got back goalside, his block could only deflect Lozano’s shot over the helpless Lloris to give the Eredivisie champions a shock lead.

Having had all of the possession and chances, it was a terrible goal to give away, but Pochettino’s men responded impressively.

Spurs thought they had equalised five minutes later when Sanchez put the ball in the net, but the goal was ruled out with the linesman’s flag up.

Tottenham didn’t have to wait too much longer before they did finally level the score though, and it involved the busy Trippier.

England’s right-back did well down the right, after collecting Eriksen’s pass, and cut back for Moura to drill home the equaliser via a deflection.

The Lilywhites were back in the game, but let their levels drop just before the break and were almost made to pay on the stroke of half time when Gaston Pereiro let fly and hit the crossbar.

Fortunately for Spurs it failed to go in and was 1-1 at the break, and they soon found top gear after the restart with Eriksen going close in the 53rd minute.

The Denmark playmaker failed to beat Jeroen Zoet, but less than two minutes later the PSV goalkeeper had to pick the ball out of his net.

Eriksen was involved again, and produced a wonderful cross for Kane to head home his seventh goal of the season with 55 on the clock.

Spurs, knowing it was a must-win, continued to push for a third and goalscorer Kane saw another effort saved before substitute Lamela hit the crossbar.

Tottenham seemed in control, but disaster struck in the 79th minute when another error put the visitors under pressure.

Eriksen lost possession and Lozano raced through and Lloris come out of his goal and fouled the PSV attacker.

It was deemed bad enough to earn the Spurs captain a red card meaning they had to play the last 11 minutes with 10-men.

Michel Vorm was introduced and immediately called into action, saving de Jong’s free kick excellently to keep the score 2-1 to Tottenham.

The pressure was mounting now, however, and eventually the hosts found a leveller with 87 on the clock.

A free kick into the Spurs area was not dealt with properly and de Jong was able to smash home, much to the delight of the PSV fans.

With minutes remaining, Tottenham were heading for their first point of the group, but it was not enough.

Even PSV knew only a win would do for them and both teams pusher for a winner, and yet it failed to arrive.

It finished level and leaves the two sides on the verge of failing to qualify for the round of 16 stage with three group games still left to play.
