Spurs fire four past Liverpool on record-breaking day at Wembley to move up to joint-second in the Premier League table

Mauricio Pochettino hailed his Tottenham Hotspur team after thumping Liverpool 4-1 in the Premier League yesterday.

Spurs saw off the Reds thanks to a brace by Harry Kane and further strikes from Heung-min Son and Dele Alli.

Liverpool made it 2-1 in the first half with Mohamed Salah reducing the deficit, but it was always going to be Tottenham’s day and they impressed in front of an A-list cast.

“It was fantastic performance and I must congratulate the players for their quality and effort,” Pochettino told Sky Sports.

“We started very well and I’m so happy for this in front of our fans, in front of Diego Maradona, Kobe Bryant, so I think it’s an unbelievable day.”

Kane opened the scoring early on after latching onto Kieran Trippier’s pass before keeping his nerve to round Simon Mignolet and fire home.

It was 2-0 in the 11th minute when Dejan Lovren misjudged Hugo Lloris’ throw and Kane squared for Son, who produced a superb low finish.

Salah pulled one back when Jordan Henderson played a fine through ball and the Reds winger speed past Jan Vertonghen and fired past Lloris.

But Alli restored Tottenham’s two-goal lead with a volley on the stroke of half time to cap a good individual display.

Vertonghen was denied a goal in the 56th minute when Roberto Firmino cleared his effort off the line, but Kane was on hand to drill in and conclude the scoring at Wembley in front of a record crowd of 80,827 – a new Premier League attendance.

Pochettino added: “It is so difficult to pick only one moment because there were many things, which I was pleased with.

“First of all the commitment and effort of the players and the mentality in the way we played and then our fans were fantastic.

“We had 80,000 people at Wembley and it’s starting to feel like home and that’s important because we feel we can win here in every game, so I think the confidence is so important for us.”

He continued: “It was important we were aggressive and tried to play football and not give them space because they are so good with (Philippe) Coutinho, Salah and Firmino when they run.

“We conceded a goal so it is so difficult to stop them, but we made a mistake in that situation, although it was a foul before on Kane by Firmino.

“We lost a little bit of focus, but after that we performed fantastic and we are pleased we played well and the first half was very good.”

The win moves Spurs up to joint-second in the table with Manchester United, who they face at Old Trafford next Saturday.
