The Tottenham Hotspur boss revealed his delight at watching his players secure only their second victory away to a top-six rival in 20 attempts under his management

Mauricio Pochettino admitted he was thrilled for Tottenham Hotspur’s supporters after his team secured their first win at Chelsea since February 1990.

Alvaro Morata put the hosts ahead with 30 minutes played, but Christian Eriksen levelled on the stroke of half time with a stunning long-range strike.

It was the catalyst for a fine second period for Spurs as Dele Alli grabbed a double to help them move eight points clear of the Blues in the battle for a Champions League spot next season.

Pochettino said: “I think it was a fantastic victory for us and a massive three points in the race for the top four.

“To achieve the top-four at the end of the season is our challenge. Of course I’m very happy because we were 1-0 down and the team showed great character and good quality.

“In the end we deserved the victory and I’m so happy for our fans and everyone at Tottenham.”

Alli was the star of the show come full time with his 11th and 12th goals of the season enough to earn Spurs a vital three points.

It came after a tough week for the 21-year-old with England boss Gareth Southgate twice leaving him on the bench during the friendlies with the Netherlands and Italy.

Spurs’ manager again offered his backing for the former MK Dons youngster and also added there is too much pressure placed on his shoulders.

“I’m very pleased for Dele. It was a tough period for him, but for me there is no doubt about his talent and character,” said Pochettino.

“I am so happy for him because he deserves this. He works so hard and in the end he is a great talent and he is only 21-years-old.

“Sometimes we forget and lose focus that he is only 21 and the expectation is too much and sometimes he has too much pressure on his shoulders.”

Alli coped just fine with the expectation today and silenced any critics he is having a bad campaign.

With seven league fixtures left, Spurs and their talented attacking midfielder are well placed to be in the Champions League again next season.
