Spurs made it 10 league wins in a row at White Hart Lane despite not having their top goalscorer

Mauricio Pochettino was pleased Tottenham Hotspur were able to cope without top goalscorer Harry Kane as they maintained their fine form at White Hart Lane by beating Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League this afternoon.

The England striker is set for at least a month on the sidelines after suffering ankle ligament damage last weekend during Spurs’ FA Cup tie with Millwall.

But Tottenham passed their first test without Kane as first-half goals from Christen Eriksen and Dele Alli earned them another home victory.

Pochettino said: “I think it was a great opportunity to win and you always will miss your main striker, but what can we do if he is injured?

“It was important for us to get that feeling without him, to win the game and to score goals and keep our position in the table. It was an important three points.”

With no Kane on the pitch, Alli stepped up to take the responsibility from the spot when Spurs won a penalty in the 31st minute.

There was some debate about who was going to take the spot kick initially before it was decided the former MK Dons man would.

But Pochettino said: “It is good you have players on the pitch who want to take the responsibility to take the penalty. That’s fantastic.

“There was no Harry Kane, so for me everyone can take the penalty and when somebody wants to shoot, for me it is okay and no problem.”

Heung-Min Son was preferred up front for Tottenham, but struggled to make much of an impact against Southampton’s back line.

Vincent Janssen was only introduced for the final four minutes at White Hart Lane, though impressed in his short cameo.

Pochettino added: “Vincent was good and now he will have the possibility to play more and be more involved. I think he showed great energy.”

Kyle Walker was also forced off late on with Kieran Trippier replacing him and there was some suggestions it was due to a wrist injury.

The Tottenham manager quashed worries about the fitness of the full-back by revealing it was a tactical decision to bring him off.

“My decision to replace Kyle wasn’t because of an injury,” said Pochettino. “We saw his thumb was causing him a problem after, but I don’t believe it is a big thing.”
