The club record signing replicated Mousa Dembele by scoring on his Spurs debut

Tanguy Ndombele provided a glimpse of what he could do on Saturday during the 3-1 win over Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has insisted the potential of the midfielder is amazing.

It ended up being a debut to remember for all the right reasons for the Frenchman, who struck a wonderful equaliser in the 73rd minute.

Ndombele curled Lucas Moura's pass through a crowd of bodies and into the bottom corner and it inspired a comeback victory in the first game of this season's Premier League for Spurs.

But Pochettino said: "It was a fantastic performance, but to be honest there is a lot to improve, he only showed 30 or 40 per cent of his potential. He has amazing potential to improve."

For Tottenham fans that's a wonderful prospect, and it's no doubt a mix of realism and also caution from the Lilywhites manager.

The last thing Ndombele needs is to get ahead of himself after one match in the league and there were elements of his game which need improving.

In the first half especially a number of his passes went astray, although this is to be expected from someone trying to force the issue and threat through balls to the Spurs attackers.

He also lost his marker on a number of occasions, which against the elite clubs will see him punished, but it will be a learning curve at the beginning for Ndombele.

What makes his signing extremely exciting is the vision and flair of the midfielder, who could help fill the void of goals from the centre of the park for Tottenham.

Although Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have chipped in from higher up the pitch, Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko are not regularly on target and nor have Eric Dier or Victor Wanyama been in recent times or Mousa Dembele before that.

For Pochettino, shooting is an area where Ndombele needs to improve, but this was a great start for the 22-year-old.

He added: "It's one of the aspects he needs to work on, he didn't score too many goals at Lyon, but that is one of the areas that is a target for him to improve this season.

"It is so early, in his first game he scored. I am delighted for him, he is a player that arrived to the team from another country and it is always a difficult adaption and this is going to help him to feel happy and comfortable on the pitch and with his team."

Ndombele came through his first test with big thumbs up, but his next on Saturday at Manchester City will be a lot tougher, although he didn't do badly the last time he was at the Etihad.
