The Argentinian highlighted the problems La Liga are having with VAR in respect of what still needs to be done with the system

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino made his thoughts on Video Assistant Referee (VAR) clear again following Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur will take a slender advantage to Stamford Bridge in the League Cup semi-finals after a resolute display at the back during the first leg.

Harry Kane’s first-half penalty settled the tense London derby, but it was only awarded by VAR after a lengthy stoppage.

While Pochettino was pleased to see the right decision arrive in the end, he explained why he did not celebrate.

He said: “To be honest, I am not happy with that system. It is a system that we need to still be agreed in the way we are going to use it.

“I think a good example is La Liga because no one is happy because no one knows the clear way we are going to use.

“Everyone is complaining now in Spain from day one and I hope that we now have time to develop that system.

“We need to work a lot, between players, coaching staff and referees, and it needs to be a tool to improve the game.

“Football, you know, sometimes we cannot talk about football that must be fair because different games, for example, this one maybe Chelsea shoot more off target and on target than Tottenham, but to talk about fair or unfair it is about the decision of the referee.

“Sometimes they can make a mistake like we make a mistake or the players make a mistake on the pitch, but of course it is a system that sometimes kills the emotions.

“It was a little bit of an advantage for us, a good decision for Tottenham, but I didn’t celebrate because we were waiting five minutes.

“People may say ‘this guy is crazy’ but I tell you and I get the benefit if I am in the wrong way when it maybe does not benefit us.

“It is easy to complain but now I need to be clear and honest and say I am not happy all too much.

“Some percentage of the referee’s mistakes we need to keep, but the decision we cannot stop evolution. How we can help is agreeing with the referees, and players and between all the football people of how we are going to use, so that is most important.”
