The Argentinean last lost three games in a row when he was at Southampton and he responded positively back then

Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs are in uncharted territory right now and it puts more pressure than needed on Saturday’s clash at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Last night at the San Siro, Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-1 for a third consecutive time this month – after earlier defeats at Watford and at home to Liverpool.

This is a first for Pochettino at Spurs, but he did experience it at Southampton and come out on the other side.

During his 18 months with the Saints, the Argentinean had a few tricky periods with three defeats in a row occurring twice.

Between February 15 2014 and March 1 2014, Southampton lost in the FA Cup at Sunderland, went down 3-1 at West Ham United and were beaten 3-0 by Liverpool.

Pochettino managed to get the Hampshire-based club back on track with a win at Crystal Palace though, and then guided them to a solid finish.

It was during this period where the former Espanyol boss caught the eye of Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and the rest, as they say, is history.

There is no doubt Pochettino’s relationship with Levy is very good and this is clear from the book he released last year.

Both will be hurting right now with Spurs still not in their new stadium and now on the back foot both domestically and abroad.

A response in terms of a result must happen at Brighton at the weekend or this current blip may turn into a full blown crisis.

Some will say it already is the latter and modern football would suggest it is, but Pochettino’s new deal this summer and his success at Tottenham over the past four years surely counts for something, right?

A win at the Amex Stadium on Saturday and progression in the League Cup next week will make things look a lot better at Spurs and halt the developing storm.

Even Wednesday’s third round home tie against Watford brings its own problems, however, with the game occurring at the home of MK Dons - StadiumMK.

Two victories this week will get some of the pressure off the boss, but it is easier said than done given the team just collapsed in Italy.

So how does Pochettino achieve the wins he needs? A start would be an improvement in front of goal with Spurs missing key chances in recent defeats.

A second area where they must be better is defending set-pieces and this weekend offers them an opportunity to show they have learned from past mistakes.

Lose again and panic will set in, but Tottenham have the quality to defeat Brighton and must show their true potential in the Premier League evening kick-off on Saturday.

It’s over to you Spurs...
