The former Netherlands international has struggled since deputising for Hugo Lloris this month

Mauricio Pochettino has defended Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Michel Vorm for his part in Saturday’s 2-1 loss at home to Liverpool.

The former Swansea City stopper had an eventful afternoon at Wembley Stadium and was involved in both of the visitors’ goals.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s opener occurred after Vorm had flapped at James Milner’s corner initially.

And then Roberto Firmino’s tap-in saw the ball slip through the Dutchman’s hands after Jan Vertonghen had deflected Sadio Mane’s cross onto the post.

When discussing the opening goal of the game, Pochettino insisted he saw a mistake take place in the build-up to the corner which Vorm flapped at.

The incident he was maybe referring to was either Toby Alderweireld’s pass inside his own area being blocked or Christian Eriksen’s poor header which gifted Mane possession after Spurs seemed to clear the danger.

Pochettino said: “If you ask me if it was his mistake. I think it wasn’t his mistake because maybe my vision is different.

“I accept the opinion, but it was a complicated situation with (Virgil) van Dijk in front of him with Vertonghen and a few players there, so it is not easy to take the ball.

“For Hugo (Lloris) too, it is difficult because you know what happens and it is so unfair. Always when you lose, always the players that are not on the pitch are the best and that is the most unfair situation you can translate.

“Of course, if it is good it is good and no good, no good. But I think it wasn’t his mistake. If you analyse the action, then maybe you put the focus on a different player.

“Michel was involved and the team, which is responsible and I am responsible, but it wasn’t the problem with not getting the three points, so I am happy with his performance.

“I am very happy because it is not easy in four seasons to be in the shadow of Hugo Lloris.”

What would please Pochettino most now is a solid display by Vorm tonight at the San Siro as Spurs take on Inter Milan in their Champions League Group B opener.
