Tottenham Hotspur are set to play games at their new stadium in the 2018/19 season, but may start the campaign with a string of away fixtures

There is still no official date for when Tottenham Hotspur will move into their new 62,000-seater stadium, but when they do, time will be needed for the team to adjust to new surroundings – that’s the view of boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Speaking after the 5-4 win over Leicester City on the final day of the Premier League campaign, the Argentinean was asked if he was relieved to be moving back to N17.

While Pochettino is excited about Spurs’ future in their new ground, especially after signing a new five-year contract earlier in May, he is aware it will not be easy in the initial months.

Tottenham look set to play the first few games of the 2018/19 Premier League season away from home, like West Ham United did during the past campaign, to facilitate the completion of their new stadium.

Once it is finalised and testing events have been successful, Spurs will return to north London after a fairly positive year at Wembley.

After starting slowly at the national stadium, the Lilywhites turned the Brent venue into a fortress and only lost on five occasions there to Chelsea, West Ham United, Juventus, Manchester City and Man United – with the last defeat in the FA Cup.

Spurs began life at Wembley with a three-game winless run domestically, but went on to record 20 wins at the national stadium in all competitions and will hope to make their new venue just as difficult a place to visit for opposition teams next season.

But Pochettino warned: “Yes I am relieved to go back, but in the same way we are thinking we need to create, in our new stadium, our new home. It will be tough from the beginning to settle there.

“A new stadium will smell different and for our fans it will be the same, so we are going to have time to settle there, but it will be a difficult task to create again that atmosphere.

“Of course when you are going to feel from day one that it’s your new house, and it will be fantastic, I hope it will make it easier than it was here at Wembley.”
