Mossbourne Community Academy were celebrating collecting their GCSE results yesterday with 54 students securing 161 grade 9 scores, equivalent to a former A**.

There were smiles all round from students after 87per cent of pupils achieved five 9 - 4 (A**-C) grades and 70% received 9 - 5 (A**-B) including English and maths.

Over 60pc of students achieved a grade 7 and above in non-core subjects like Music, French and German, and the average grade for triple sciences, studied by 100 students, was also a grade 7.

Three of the most successful students Mia Rupani, Madeline Coole and Zuhri Oliver James are now looking forward to continuing their studies at Mossbourne Sixth Form college, after they all achieved impressive results including nine grade 9s.

One of them, Mia Rupani, said the grades were “not expected at all”. She said: “I wrote down the grades I thought I was going to get on my phone and they were all 6s and 7s.

Mia, who achieved nine grade 9’s, one grade 8 and one A*, said: “I give all the credit to the teachers, every time I went to them for help, advice and extra work, they were so willing to help me and I can’t thank Mossbourne teachers enough for that.” Mia plans to study physics, maths and Spanish starting in September.

Madeline Cood, who would like to read medicine at University said she was “pleasantly surprised” with her high grades – which included nine grade 9’s, one grade 8 and one A* including, English literature, Spanish and physics.

She said: “I am going to stay at Mossbourne for my A-levels as the support provided here is excellent. The teachers are brilliant and give you all the extra help you need.”

Madeline plans to apply for the medical bursary programme, which is a Mossbourne run initiative to help students who would like to pursue a medical career receive private school equivalent support.

Zuhri Oliver James, who achieved five grade 9s, four grade 8s and one A* said he will continue to study at Mossbourne as the teachers are “organised and supportive.”

He added: “They sacrifice a lot of time and put in a lot of effort. Studying here has not only helped me to achieve good grades but I’ve also taken up rowing which has enabled me to make friends and grow as a person.”

He will be studying geography, biology and psychology at Mossbourne because he really likes the “community spirit and opportunities available” at the school.

Peter Hughes, chief executive of the Mossbourne Federation, which is behind the academy, said he was “delighted” with the results.

He added: “These results show yet again, that with hard work, determination and the right attitude, success is achievable. The students have done exceptionally well, especially given the new grading system this year, which meant pupils received numerical grades in most subjects.

“I am delighted that the new top grade 9 score was awarded so many times to our students, which I am certain is among the best results in the country. I would like to congratulate the students, staff and parents and thank them for all their hard work.”
