The mother of a Hackney cyclist who went under the wheels of a lorry at Dalston Junction has released an emotional appeal as she struggles to come to terms with his ‘devastating’ death.

Daniel Cox, 28, of Lower Clapton Road, was seriously injured when he was involved in a collision with a large Mercedes goods truck shortly before 4.45pm on February 2.

The aspiring art curator and bar tender was taken to the Royal London Hospital in a critical condition but died two days later.

Now his mother Christine Cox, 50, has asked witnesses to help her fight for justice for her son.

“Dan’s brother Sam and the rest of the family, together with his many, many friends are absolutely devastated by the loss of our beautiful son, grandson, brother and friend,” said the software developer, who lives in Bath.

“Dan was a very special, unique and generous person who spread warmth and joie de vivre to everyone he met. We cannot comprehend that a life that shone so brightly and inspired so many has come to such a tragic and untimely end. The world is a much dimmer place without him and we will love and miss him forever.

“We are calling for witnesses to this awful incident to come forward so we can understand exactly what happened.

“We must all try to prevent such a terrible and preventable loss of life happening again.”

She backed the Gazette’s Hackney Cycle Safe campaign and asked anyone with information about the crash to call solicitor Paul Kitson on 0800 884 0304 or email enquiries@rjw.co.uk.

A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after the collision. He has been bailed to return, pending further enquiries, on a date in July.

A spokeswoman for Hackney police said investigating officers had received a good response to previous witness appeals.
