FA Cup fourth round: Newport County 1 (Amond 38) Tottenham Hotspur 1 (Kane 82)

Tottenham Hotspur and Newport County will have to do it all again after their FA Cup fourth-round tie ended in a 1-1 draw.

After making a slow start to the match, Spurs fell behind towards the end of the opening half as the Exiles took a deserved lead.

Huffing and puffing for much of the second period, Spurs were finally able to find an equaliser late on through Harry Kane.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino named a strong side for the trip to Wales, with Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier and Kane all starting at Rodney Parade.

Spurs could have falled behind inside four minutes when a ball across the box found Newport captain Joss Labadie went through the box.

Former West Ham United forward Frank Nouble broke into the box to get on the end of the ball, but smashed his effort over the bar.

The Exiles were making a bright start, with Labadie testing Spurs stopper Michel Vorm from distance three minutes later.

The Londoners were able to weather the storm and were growing into the game, as well as growing accustomed to their surroundings.

With 14 minutes left in the half, Spurs produced their best move of the game, with Kane drawing a fine save from County stopper Joe Day at close range.

However, it was Newport who took the lead in the 38th minute through forward Padraig Amond, heading home a Robbie Willmott cross from the right.

Amond was almost at the double four minutes later, pouncing on a poor clearance before drawing a fine save from Vorm from a tight angle.

With Spurs struggling going forward, there was no riposte forthcoming before the break as Pochettino’s men trailed at the interval.

However, they nearly mustered one in the 57th minute, with Kane narrowly heading over from close range.

Tottenham were pumping numbers forward in attack, though struggled to break down a resolute home defence.

In the 68th minute, a flowing move saw the ball make its way to substitute Heung-min Son, but his effort was well saved by Day.

Finally, though, Spurs were able to find a way past Day in the 82nd minute through Kane.

A corner from the left drifted across goal to the England skipper, who tapped home unmarked from close range to level the score.

Kane went close to a winner in stoppage time, expertly trapping a long ball over the top, before having his shot blocked by Newport defender Ben White.

With time almost up, Kane nearly found Alli with a delightful dink into the box, but the Spurs playmaker was unable to get a meaningful touch.

It proved to be the final goalmouth action of the game, with the sides set to meet again at Wembley next month to decide who progresses in the cup.
