An East End bobby caught a landlord and a lorry driver drinking after hours when he peered through the frosted glass window of a Bethnal Green boozer.
The Pc told Old Street Court he saw the men drinking whisky and saying “cheers” before his helmet reflected in the glass table and they shouted: “Look out – police!”
Licensee Michael John Regan and Harold Roberts both denied consuming intoxicating liquor after hours in a public house, but were convicted. Regan was also convicted of selling intoxicating liquor after permitted hours. Regan was fined £5, Roberts £3.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Silverman, 52, sat in Hackney’s Mare Street offices and refused to leave until she was given a flat. She was arrested after an argument with police outside in front of crowds. “You may normally be a very nice person, but you can’t jump your place in the housing queue by kicking up a row and shouting,” she was told.
