Hackney residents aged 60 and over are being invited to join a new membership scheme, called the Hackney Circle, which provides free events and special offers in restaurants and cultural venues around Dalston Square.

The the nine week pilot scheme of activities and offers launches on September 17 at the Dalston CLR James Library and has been tailored following feedback from the borough’s older residents.

Events include a film screening at the Rio cinema, a Mediterranean garden party at the Dalston Eastern Curve Garden, a performance of Orson Welles’ Misbehaving at the Arcola Theatre and a month-long programme of photo preservation workshops at the Hackney Archives.

The programme hopes to build friendships and reduce isolation as well as providing social spaces.

Participating restaurants and cafés are to introduce Hackney Circle branded chairs that are specially upholstered to make visiting a more comfortable experience.

Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet member for health, social care and culture said: “Dalston has changed a lot in recent years and is one of the most exciting places in London. It’s really important that everyone is able to enjoy all the great things, new and established, that are on offer in the area, no matter what their age.

“The Hackney Circle membership is a great way for residents over the age of 60 to socialise and visit new places while being made to feel comfortable and included. I would like to encourage residents to head down to the Dalston CLR James Library to find out more about the Hackney Circle and to become a member.”

Residents can also find out how to become a member by contacting Lucy McMenemy on 020 8356 2919 or via email: lucy.mcmenemy@hackney.gov.uk.
