Local campaigners want to turn it into a heritage and arts centre

The public got a first glimpse inside the 1840s Old Schoolhouse at the weekend, during the Clapton Festival.

Once a mission school for the children of itinerant riverboat people and workers, the Clapton Arts Trust has put in a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to turn the building in Lea Bridge Road into a river heritage and arts centre.

Visitors tried their hand at the prehistoric skill of flint knapping to make stone tools with teacher Will Lord, and six artists from the Vulpus Vulpus studio exhibited a show, Approach Togetherness.
