More than 100 independent firms in Hackney will be offering incentives to get people to recycle more.
It’s part of the council’s “recycling rewards scheme”, which is open to all 113,000 households in Hackney. So far 22,000 have signed up.
It rewards people with a discount card to use in businesses such as restaurants, cafes, galleries and barbers. Long White Cloud, Stereo 92, Anjelique, Pickles of London and Vintage Basement are just a few of those offering discounts.
The council measures how much recycling is produced by each of Hackney’s 21 wards. Points are then distributed to card holders as a reward for strong performances.
Peter Doan, owner of Vietnamese restaurant Uncle Nam’s, said: “We’re interested in anything to do with recycling so we were happy to help. I think it’s a good thing to be involved with.”
Environmental business Local Green Points is running the scheme on the council’s behalf.
Managing director Graham Simmonds said: “It’s great that there are already 110 local businesses helping promote the scheme and providing Hackney residents with a wide range of really motivating offers.”
It’s being bankrolled by a grant from the £11million national “recycling reward scheme” fund.
