It’s located right next to the hustle and bustle of Kingsland Road, but you only have to walk through the doors of the new Smooth You Town Spa to feel like you’ve escaped from it all.

Glistening cream tiles, sumptuous sofas and staff beaming from ear to ear all greet you on arrival at this impressive £1.5million state-of-the-art retreat, leaving you feeling like you’re anywhere but in the heart of Dalston with its bellowing market traders, car horns and packed pavements.

But the fact that this spa, in the newly developed Dalston Square, is smack bang in the centre of this thriving corner of Hackney – and that there is nothing else like it in the area, let alone outside of a five star central London hotel – makes it all the more special.

Created by Patrick and Luma Mitchell – the husband and wife team behind the popular Smooth You hair and beauty salon in Essex Road, Islington – no expense appears to have been spared in kitting out this 5,000 square foot space.

It’s designed by the renowned Melvyn Allen, has pioneering equipment including a laser hair removal machine which cost the equivalent of an Aston Martin, boasts a range of ground-breaking semi-medical treatments and even has its own radio station.

And I was lucky enough to enjoy an afternoon of pampering in its opening week last month.

First on my itinerary was a session on one of the high tech Sun Angel sunbeds which form part of Smooth You’s Safer Tanning Company, launched with the opening of this new spa.

Like most people, I’m weary of using sunbeds but do miss the benefits a bit of sunshine brings – not just the glow, but the zap of Vitamin D to lift the spirits. But the Sun Angel beds measure your skin’s sensitivity to UV light, and adjust accordingly over the course of 20 minutes – which, it promises, will never allow you to burn. And I came off of the sunbed with some distinctive tan lines but no redness whatsoever.

With a healthy glow in place, it was time for my skin to undergo some TLC. With products developed by the US skincare pioneer Dr Murad – whose UK base is located in King’s Cross – I was treated to a ‘‘Sun Undone’’ facial. Ahead of this my skin was tested for signs of sun damage, which I was relieved to hear was minimal.

Then it was onto one of the luxurious treatment rooms – all named after east London postcodes – to settle down onto the extra-wide, heated and incredibly comfortable therapy beds.

As well as targeting sun damage with Vitamin C-rich lotions, the facial also worked to eradicate toxins and repair skin by encouraging the production of collagen.

To start off with my therapist mildly steamed my skin to help dislodge any impurities, before setting about deep cleansing, applying a mask and massaging in creams bursting with mineral goodness. Coupled with a scalp, neck and shoulder massage, it was one of the most relaxing hours I’ve spent this year – and my glowing skin was certainly thankful for it as well.

The spa’s signature treatment – which I was also able to experience – has been developed specifically and exclusively for them by Murad and combines relaxing massage with the skincare company’s renowned glycolic peel and high performing ingredients. It also started off with a burst of steam, before a blissful back, shoulder and scalp massage which left me unwinding to the point I struggled to stay awake. But then the peel was applied to my face, leaving me with a mildly burning, itching sensation – which, I was told, was the formula working its magic and penetrating deep down beyond the first few layers of skin.

Once it was removed, the skin was then loaded up with nutritious creams. A visible difference could be seen straight away and for days afterwards – my open pores drastically reduced and my skin was smooth, dewy and radiant.

The spa also comes complete with an impressive nail studio with high tech pedicure seats. I opted for a gel manicure with products from the well-known Jessica brand. I’ve had many gel manicures done in my time and, despite assurances they would last up to three weeks, I’ve always managed to get a chip or two within just a few days. Up until now I had put this down to my own clumsiness, but it’s now two-and-a-half weeks on from my manicure at Smooth You and there’s not a chip or scratch in sight – the gorgeous mink colour is still as glossy as the day it was applied and perfectly intact.

The last part of the spa left to experience was the hair salon and, after a deep moisturising treatment, my hair was blow dried into the kind of big, bouncy and glossy waves that Cheryl Cole would be proud of – and I certainly felt I had got my own superstar treatment to match throughout the day.

And that’s exactly what Smooth You is striving for. Patrick and Luma’s approach, they stress, is to bring first-class customer service back to the health beauty industry, even offer ing every client complimentary drinks including champagne.

They’re certainly succeeding in this goal already, and have developed a luxurious space that people will just want to keep returning to.
