A film screening at the Rio on Saturday will mark the International Day of the Disappeared, which highlights the fate of those imprisoned under poor conditions and in places unknown to their relatives or legal representatives.
The Islington and Hackney Amnesty human rights group has organised the screening of Syria’s Disappeared at the Dalston cinema.
It tells the story of tens of thousands of men, women and children who have been placed into a network of clandestine detention centres by the regime of President Bashar al Assad and will be followed by a Q&A session with the film’s director Sara Afshar.
Louise Orton, chair of the Islington and Hackney Amnesty human rights group said: “Many people may have seen the relentless bombing campaign in Syria on the news, but they may not have seen that innocent people, opposed to the Syrian regime, have been captured, put in prison and tortured and hung. As a local Amnesty group we want people to know about this and then do something about it.”
The screening starts at 12 noon at the cinema in Kingsland High Street.
