A restaurant in Shoreditch must pay more than £5,000 for dumping rubbish in the street. C&L Foods Ltd, which owns Mexican Express in City Road, was in trouble for failing to dispose of its waste properly and was fined £2,000 with costs of £3,270.

Thames Magistrates’ Court heard how the manager allegedly denied that black bin sacks left outside the premises had come from the restaurant, but till receipts found among the waste by council inspectors indicated that it had.

The manager was allegedly also unable to provide evidence that arrangements were in place to legally dispose of rubbish.

Hackney council claims the issue first came to light in 2011 and, despite warnings and advice on how to properly dispose of waste, inspectors found further breaches in 2012 and decided to take legal action.

Cllr Feryal Dermici, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “There is simply no excuse for any restaurant to dump its food waste in the street because it can’t be bothered to properly dispose of it.’’
