Ben Davies won’t give up hope of starting in another League Cup final – even if he is named in the line-up for tonight’s Europa League tie in Florence.

Left-back Davies was part of the Swansea side that beat Bradford City 5-0 in the final at Wembley two years ago, playing for 83 minutes and then lifting the trophy.

However, the summer signing appears to be behind his rival Danny Rose in Mauricio Pochettino’s pecking order, having started just one of the last five games – last week’s European clash with Fiorentina, when Pochettino rested a host of key players.

The expectation is that Davies will be picked for the second leg in Italy this evening and that Pochettino will then opt for Rose – who scored his third goal in 10 games and earned the man of the match award against West Ham on Sunday – in the cup final.

However, Davies insists he won’t abandon his hopes of playing at Wembley again if he does find himself facing Fiorentina tonight, and that he will view the game as a last chance to impress.

“I’m confident I’m fit enough to deal with those games every three days,” said the 21-year-old. “You can’t read into anything our manager does – there’s a lot of chopping and changing so it’s hard to say what will happen.

“Every player in the entire squad is fighting for a place in that final and it’s no different for myself and Danny. We’re both going to be hoping to play in that game and whoever does will have each other’s backing all the way.

“Every time I get that chance to get out on the pitch I’ve just got to show what I can do.

“I was happy enough with how I played last week, but there’s always room for improvement. That’s what I’m doing. I’m still young, I’m working hard and every chance I get out there I’ve got to try to impress.”

Davies will certainly not be lacking in motivation if he starts against Fiorentina tonight – he was knocked out of the competition in the last 32 with Swansea last season and is hoping to go at least one step further with his new club.

He said: “I got to this stage last year playing against Napoli, and we got knocked out in the second leg away from home – but hopefully we can go out there and not have that experience and do something about it.

“The cup final is obviously in the back of every player’s mind in the squad, but it’s up to us to be professional. We’ve got two games either side of that [Spurs host Swansea on Wednesday] so we have to be focused on every game that’s coming.”
