Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen reflect on Tottenham Hotspur’s impressive draw in the first leg of their last-16 tie in the Champions League

After a terrible start, Spurs were able to fight back and in style on Tuesday night and secure an excellent 2-2 draw in Turin against Juventus.

Many supporters could have been forgiven for casting their minds back to April 2011 when Tottenham Hotspur lost 4-0 at Real Madrid in the last-eight of the Champions League – conceding after four minutes and going down to 10-men with 14 on the clock.

It appeared a similar story against the Old Lady as after two minutes they fell behind when Gonzalo Higuain volleyed past Hugo Lloris.

He made it 2-0 with merely nine minutes gone from the penalty spot, after Ben Davies had brought down Federico Bernardeschi inside the area.

But Mauricio Pochettino’s team fought back and showed their character yet again to earn a superb first leg result.

Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen netted once in each half to secure a 2-2 draw and make sure Tottenham didn’t suffer a thrashing in Italy after they horror start.

“We could have (crumbled) – away from home, in the Champions League and at this stage, but it shows the character of the squad,” Kane told BT Sport.

“It was an excellent performance after the start we had and we deserved to get back into the game, and when you look back now, we are taking two away goals back to Wembley – it’s a great result.”

Kane, minutes after failing to convert a very good headed chance, rounded Gianluigi Buffon with 35 on the clock, after latching onto Dele Alli’s pass, and slotted home to reduce the deficit for Spurs.

He added: “I should have scored the header, but, like I always say, you have to be ready for the next one and Dele put a great ball in and I managed to finish it off, and it got us back into the game, which was important.”

The Lilywhites got lucky on the stroke of half time when Serge Aurier fouled Douglas Costa inside the area, but this time Higuain could only fire against the crossbar.

Spurs made the most of their let-off too by equalising 19 minutes from time when an Eriksen free kick squeezed past Buffon.

It was thoroughly deserved for the visitors after going on to dominate most of the game following that terrible 10 minutes.

“The 2-2 draw does (put us in a great position for the second leg), but it will be a completely different game,” said Eriksen.

“We are sure we will have our chances at Wembley and we’ll go into the game with a lot of confidence and we’re looking forward to it.”

Tottenham may not have won in Turin, but the performance and comeback was another clear demonstration of the squad’s growing maturity.
