Karen Hills’ team haven’t tasted success since November and were left frustrated after a 4-3 defeat at Sheffield FC last weekend

Wendy Martin insists the Tottenham Hotspur Ladies are more motivated than ever to get a win on Sunday when they begin their SSE Women’s FA Cup campaign at home to Doncaster Rovers.

Spurs succumbed to more frustration in Dronfield after coming out on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller with Sheffield FC, but it wasn’t without a big moment of controversy.

Coral-Jade Haines, Bianca Baptiste and Sarah Wiltshire struck for Karen Hills’ side in the 4-3 loss and Martin found the net too only to see her effort ruled out for offside.

The Tottenham attacker is certain Spurs would have won the FA Women’s Super League 2 game had her shot from Wiltshire’s cross been allowed to stand.

Martin said: “It’s really frustrating and the goal being disallowed has proved the difference between a point or more and no points for us. It’s difficult when things go against you like that.

“Unfortunately things like that are out of our control, but what is in our control is the performances, how hard we work and how much we keep pushing.

“After the decision we kept battling, kept working hard and trying to push for the equaliser. We showed again that we can compete at this level and it’s just really the finer details that it’s coming down to at the moment.

“That’s making a difference between winning and losing games, but we’ve competed right until the final whistle and it’s only going to be a matter of time before we start getting the results now.”

A winning feeling for Spurs has been elusive since the beginning of November and the long-serving forward, despite being proud of the spirit the squad showed at the weekend, says as a collective unit mistakes need to be cut out of their game.

Martin added: “Again we showed our spirit, character and unity as a team. We kept going, got ourselves back into the game on a couple of occasions, kept fighting and pushing until the end.

“We made some mistakes and we know we can do better, perform better, but the main thing was we still showed the drive that got us into this league in the first place.

“We’re making, as a team, collectively, too many mistakes and unfortunately at this level now you get punished for that. Also, we need to start being a bit more clinical in front of goal and taking our chances.

“I think it’s a combination of things we need to work on at the training ground and it is an experimental season for us. We’re trying difference formations, players, so it’s always going to be tough when you’re practising with different things.

“We’ve got a fantastic coaching staff and management team - so they’ll go away, tell us what we need to work on then we’ll go ahead and work on that.”

As alluded to, Martin sees the fourth round FA Cup tie with Donny Belles at Cheshunt FC as the perfect opportunity to find their bearings again - and despite coming out fruitless the last time they vied with The Belles - she is relishing the challenge that’s to come.

“We’re more motivated than ever to get a win,” said the Spurs Ladies legend. “It is well overdue now for us. We’re going to bounce back from the disappointment, that (feeling) is going to inspire us to get the win on Sunday.

“We’ve already proved we can compete against Doncaster and we’re quite confident. It’s a home game, hopefully we’ll have a good crowd there again supporting us, cheering us on and we’ll go on that pitch wanting nothing more than that win.”
