A printing firm will be handing over a significant amount of paper to the justice system after being caught dumping piles of rubbish in Stamford Hill.

Town hall officers found black bags, cardboard boxes and other rubbish outside Premium Printing in March.

Businesses are meant to pay to have their rubbish collected by the council or private waste firms, and store it in marked bags beforehand.

But when asked for documentation, Premium Printing was unable to prove it was disposing of waste legally.

The firm was prosecuted at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Friday and after being found guilty were ordered to pay costs totalling almost £3,000.

Regarding the first offence of failing to comply with duty of care the company was fined £1,500. A second charge of failing to furnish the council with waste transfer notes, it was fined £500.

There was also costs of £722.50 and a victim surcharge of £120, bringing the total up to £2,842.50.

Hackney’s community safety chief Cllr Caroline Selman, said: “Last week it was announced that more than one million fly-tips were dealt with by councils last year, costing taxpayers £58m to clear up.

“Once again the owner of a business has tried to save a few pounds by dumping rubbish on the street in the hope that we would collect it without asking any questions. Hopefully the size of this fine will deter others from trying to do the same thing.”

Residents and businesses can help the Council crack down on fly-tipping by reporting it online at hackney.gov.uk/fly-tipping or via the Love Clean Hackney app.
