The Gazette hunts high and low each week to bring you news of the most interesting new businesses in Hackney. This week we speak to Anne-Marie Imafidon about founding Stemettes.
Stemettes was set up by child prodigy Anne-Marie Imafidon to inspire the next generation of women into science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
The social enterprise, whose HQ is at Here East on the former Olympic Park site, runs public events, school trips, a “more-than-mentoring” programme and an app to help achieve its mission.
Anne-Marie passed maths and ICT GCSEs by the time she was 10, before becoming the youngest girl ever to pass A-level computing the following year. Since the 28-year-old founded Stemettes in 2013, more than 17,000 girls have taken part in her programme.
She said: “Our vision is that girls will be able to make informed decisions about careers in STEM so eventually women can be proportionally represented in the field and we can have more than 30pc of the UK’s STEM workforce being female – as opposed to 21pc.”
